Fire Service Survivor Benefits

Law Enforcement and Fire Service Survivor Benefits

The Law Enforcement Officers and Firemen's Survivor Benefit Review Board would like to remind our law enforcement and fire service personnel and their families of the need of timely submission of all necessary documents in order to apply for and receive benefits allowed by law.

The law states that the benefits are to be applied for within one year of the occurrence. (R.S.33:2201C(2) and R.S.33:1981C(2)). Once the Survivor Benefit Review Board receives the information, the Board, which is made up of the attorney general, the legislative auditor, and the state risk manager, or their designees, will endeavor to review the file and expedite the payment. This cannot be done, however, without the full cooperation of the law enforcement/fire department and families involved.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or any member of the Board. The current board is comprised of Richard "Mike" Thompson of the Attorney General's Office - Investigation Division, (225) 326-6100, J.S. "Bud" Thompson of the Office of Risk Management, (225) 342-8421, and Jenifer Schaye of the Legislative Auditor's Office, (225) 339-3871.
